Do Good Day with 77Kids!
This morning, the kids and I trekked into downtown D.C. to meet up with fellow bloggers Mamma Loves, Scrappin’ Michele, Parentopia Devra, JessicaAPISS, and GoonSquad Sarah to share some goodwill on behalf of 77Kids. The ever-fabulous Emily and Cooper of The Motherhood selected a group of us to celebrate National Do Good Day in various cities around the country by hitting the streets and making a small difference in people’s days.
The box of goodies we received to hand out to hot, tired and hungry tourists visiting the sights was awesome: we had everything from granola bars, to bottles of cold water, to pinwheels, bubblegum and funny masks for the kids to………
$77 crisp, dollar bills to hand out! Each dollar bill had a note attached, outlining 7 ways in which you could use $1 to “do good.”
This was particularly fun for me, because it’s rare that I get to participate in a blog event with my kids. Chatterbox took the charge very seriously. She threw on her shirt, provided by 77 Kids, and locked down her corner of the block adamantly handing out her $1 bills to skeptical passersby. And I mean skeptical! Believe it or not, it was verrrrry difficult to persuade people to accept or dollars and treats. We had to convince them that we: (a) weren’t crazy; (b) the money was real; and (c) there were no strings attached! Still, a lot of people refused to accept our gestures of goodwill. Take a peek at Chatterbox trying her darndest (bless her little heart) in this video Scrappin Michele posted:
Despite the miserable weather and some paranoid tourists, we were able to successfully pass out all $539 in a couple of hours. We had laughs doing it and, I will say that the small act of giving someone something in return for nothing really touched many people. One guy kept saying: “Wow! Are you serious? That’s so..so…nice.” And it was.
So the next time you have a dollar bill lying around, consider doing something nice for someone else with it. I guarantee you, the payoff is priceless.

Wow, that’s amazing. I can remember when I used to go with my mom to set up Voter Registration tables and it had such a big impact on my view of the importance of voting. I could plenty of remarks from people who asked why I was so worried about them not being registered when I wasn’t even old enough to vote myself. My answer: ‘Your vote determines my future.’ And for the most part that’s true.
The votes and choices we make in electing officials can affect our children later on. Just look at what voting George Bush has done to our country. Our children are suffering with funding being cut from education programs and schools. More our military teens and young adults are the ones shipped off to Iraq. So if we can affect a person’s mindset in a positive way then don’t pass up the opportunity.

It’s true about people being cautious about getting free stuff. It’s sad! Looks like Chatterbox was trooper though. What a great life lesson for her! Good for Mama!

What the kids are doing look so cute to me. Thanks for sharing the video. I had fun watching and reading your article. I love to hang out with kids and play with them, laugh with them or run with them. I hope there’s another Do Good Ways for this year. I’d be happy to come along.
